About the Wildflower Portfolio

My Wildflower Portfolio is the result of countless hours in the woods working on two wildflower identification books. Wildflowers of the Appalachian Trail was published in 1999 by Menasha Ridge Press and in 2005 Wildlfowers of the Smokies and Blue Ridge will also be published by Menasha Ridge Press.

These field guides are a collaboration with hiking friend and author, Leonard Adkins.

These projects have given me another excuse to return to the Appalachian Trail, carrying me from the lush coves of my native Georgia mountains to the windswept peaks of New England and forcing me to get on my hands, knees and belly to better understand and photograph these beautiful specimens.

Through all my travels on the AT, I have had many constant companions—juncos and deer, hickory and oak, efts and shelter mice—but no other trail companion has filled my days with as much delight as the wildflowers of the Appalachian Mountains. For this reason, these projects have been particularly rewarding.

Georgia O’Keefe once wrote, "In a way nobody sees a flower really, it is so small, we haven’t time—and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time."  I agree. In some cases, I spent two hours or more making just one photograph. I have intentionally kept the print size small for this wildflower collection because I believe the diminutive prints reflect the nature of the flowers themselves. They are wild things that to truly see, one must stop, pause, and inspect, up close and in person.

All images are available only in 3 x 4 ˝ inch prints, double matted to a size of 10 x 12-inches.

Prices: $44 matted, $75 framed in flat top, natural finish maple molding.
